Air Canada is Canada’s largest domestic and international airline, and in 2020 was among the top 20 largest airlines in the world. It is Canada’s flag carrier and a founding member of Star Alliance, the world’s most comprehensive air transportation network.
Privacy is fundamental to Air Canada’s business. It is in fact one of the top five issues on its Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) materiality matrix. Air Canada understands the importance of building customer trust and ensure best privacy practices, as it complies with myriad regulations and laws across jurisdictions.
Anthony Hemond, Privacy Counsel at Air Canada, works within the legal branch of the company advising on the global privacy landscape when operating in a vast number of countries. Anthony also supports colleagues in commercial operations who need to understand their own privacy obligations.
The Air Canada team needed a research platform to strengthen its global privacy compliance efforts and selected OneTrust DataGuidance Regulatory Research as an additional tool to contribute to building and maintaining complex privacy programs.
"There are hundreds of privacy laws across sectors and jurisdictions, and this platform allows us to have access to an organized and structured database that keeps us informed and aware of the legal changes around the world. The insights provided by DataGuidance are very useful to our team, as laws and regulations can change rapidly."

OneTrust DataGuidance – a Reliable Research Platform
OneTrust DataGuidance offers reliable information on privacy legislation, frameworks, and regulations from over 300 jurisdictions. The regulatory research platform utilizes an 800-strong network of experts who offer contributions with localized Insight articles and guidance, while the 40+ in-house legal researchers at DataGuidance deliver daily news updates, webinars, and reports.
Because of the rapidly developing nature of global privacy, Anthony finds value in receiving the DataGuidance Daily email updates. The alerts help to keep his team updated on developments with new and existing privacy legalization from around the world in a timely manner.
"It’s very easy to navigate through the breakdowns and overviews of different privacy laws through the platform, very user friendly and this is one of the reasons we opted for DataGuidance technology."
Anthony Hemond, Privacy Counsel
Furthermore, the in-house research team at DataGuidance works to ensure that the information provided through various guidance notes and jurisdictional overviews is kept up to date with the latest developments. Anthony explained, “This feature is particularly helpful because it sets the platform apart from the other sources of information available. Also, the translation of key information into English facilitates the research. For example, if we need to review guidance from a German authority, the content is automatically translated which saves us time and makes it easier to review the information.”
The privacy landscape in Canada is continuously evolving. DataGuidance will continue to be a useful source of reliable privacy information to help Air Canada navigate future reforms in the region while saving time and resources in the process.
